THE NEW NIGERIA HIGH COMMISSIONER
ARRIVES IN OTTAWA


The new High Commissioner of Nigeria to Canada, His Excellency, Ambassador Iyorwuese Hagher arrived in Ottawa on Thursday, 19 June 2008, to assume his duties. The High Commissioner and his spouse, were met on arrival at the Ottawa International Airport by officials of the Protocol Section of the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade of Canada, members of staff of the High Commission and their spouses as well as a cross-section of the Nigeria community in Ottawa.

Ambassador Hagher was ushered into his Residence at Minto Place, Rockliffe Park in highbrow Ottawa, and honoured with a colourful but brief Reception by officials of the High Commission. The Reception was also attended by members of the Nigerian community in Ottawa, led by their President, Mrs. Brenda Obaseki and NIDO representatives. Short speeches of welcome, pledges of cooperation and best wishes for a successful tenure were made by the reception party.

In his response, Ambassador Hagher expressed deep appreciation of the large turnout of Nigerians who had come to receive him and the colourful reception to which he was accorded. He promised to continue with the good work of his predecessors and to lift Nigeria-Canada relations to greater heights in the years to come.

The new High Commissioner is scheduled to present his Letters of Credence to the Governor-General of Canada, The Rt. Hon. Mrs. Michaelle Jean on Thursday 26 June 2008 in Quebec City.
