Requirements for Shipment of the  Remains of Deceased Persons to Nigeria

 In the event of the need to transport the remains of a deceased person to Nigeria, the following documents are required for sighting and authentication by the High Commission:-

  • Photocopy of the deceased’s passport.

  • Certificate of Death from the Health Department

  • Medical Certificate of Death ( Form 16); issued by the appropriate Canadian authorities

  • Burial Permit (Where applicable)

  • Statement of Death ( Form 15); issued by the appropriate Canadian authorities

  • Letter of indemnity from the Funeral Home which confirms that the remains will be shipped in an internationally acceptable form.

  • A Pre-paid self addressed Priority Post Courier envelope for the return of the authenticated documents

  • A fee of $10 per each copy of the document, payable in money order to the Nigeria High Commission as processing fee.

CERTIFICATION OF DOCUMENTS

 The original document(s) to be accompanied with the following:

  • Two Photostat copies of each of the original document page(s).

  • Evidence of the identity of applicant. e.g. Photocopy of passport with names that match those on the certificates.

  • One passport-sized photograph

  • Processing fee payable in Money Order to Nigeria High Commission, Ottawa is CAD$10.00 per original certificate.

  • Send all the above to the High Commission & enclose a self-addressed return envelope prepaid by post express or priority post.

Note:

  • Original document(s) will be returned with the certified copy (copies).
  • Processing takes at least three working days.
  • Non compliance with the requirements may delay early processing.

AUTHENTICATION OF NIGERIA'S DRIVERS LICENCE

  • The original drivers license should be accompanied by the following:

  • Original Driver's License.

  • A photocopy of the driver's license.

  • Photocopy of your Nigerian Passport data page and the page showing date of last entry into Canada.

  • CAD $20.00, processing fee payable in money order to the Nigeria High Commission, Ottawa.

  • A self-addressed return envelope. (Canada priority or xpresspost courier envelope)

Note:

  • Original document(s) will be returned with the letter of authentication

  • Processing takes at least five working days

  • Non compliance with the requirements may delay early processing.

REQUIREMENTS FOR POLICE CLEARANCE CERTIFICATE

  • Brief and self-explanatory letter:

  • Evidence of stay in Nigeria by providing photocopy of data pages of applicant’s passport that contains entry and exit stamps of the Nigerian Immigration Service.

  • Photocopy of Resident Permit in Nigeria for non-Nigerian;

  • Non-refundable processing fee of CAN$20.00 in Money Order payable to Nigeria High Commission, Ottawa;

  • Original finger prints from police;

  • Enclose a self-addressed Courier Envelope.

Note:

  • Once you fully comply with the above requirements, application will be forwarded to the Nigerian Police Force Criminal Investigation Department, Alagbon Close, Lagos - Nigeria, for the Certificate.

  • Non-compliance with the requirements and/or falsification of information may delay approval from Nigeria.

REQUIREMENTS FOR EMERGENCY TRAVEL CERTIFICATE (ETC)

The applicant must forward the following items:

  • Police Report on Loss of Passport in Canada (if Applicable);

  • Police Report of non-criminality in Canada (except for Minors);

  • Application Letter Detailing need for an ETC;

  • Photocopy of Birth Certificate or Sworn Affidavit of Age (Age Declaration);

  • Photocopy of Lost Passport (if any) or any documentation from Nigeria;

  • Photocopy to Flight ticket (Destination for Nigeria only);

  • Two (2) Passport size Photographs endorsed at the back;

  • A non-refundable processing fee of Canadian $70.00 (Seventy Canadian dollars) in Money Order or Certified Cheque payable to Nigeria High Commission, Ottawa;

  • Enclose a self-addressed Priority Courier Envelope to return your ETC Certificate;

  • The applicant may be required to attend an interview, if necessary.

It is very important to note that an Emergency Travel Certificate is only good for a single journey to Nigeria, and must be surrendered to Nigerian Immigration at the point of entry.
